Regarding a recent FDA announcement relating breast implants to breast cancer , I would like to share with my patients some information that will help alleviate their concerns. This exceedingly rare cancer is a type of lymphoma known as ALCL, which occurs in the scar tissue around the implant. One in 500,000 women with breast implants might develop this condition which is treatable by surgery. By contrast, one in 9 women in the United States are at risk for traditional types of breast cancer.
An individual who develops this condition typically develops a large painful seroma, which is a collection of fluid around the implants. Typically, the condition occurs in patients who have had implants for many years. If this condition occurs, it is likely to be just on one side. If women get large painful collections of fluid or seromas around their implants, it is not easy to miss in terms of symptoms.
Surgery is curative. This involves removing all of the scar tissue and fluid and replacing the implant. Individuals who are concerned should contact me. Mammograms and regular exams are a reasonable method of following individuals who are concerned.
Breast augmentation is probably the most commonly performed procedure in my practice. Over 20 years, I have probably treated somewhere in the range of 3000 breast implant patients. Approximately 25 % of these procedure were performed on individuals who chose to remove and replace their implants. In all patients, the capsules or scar tissue surrounding the implants is examined carefully for masses or irregularities. In almost all patients where capsule or scar is removed, the tissue has been sent to the pathologist for review.
If anyone has a concern over this recent FDA announcement, I would invite a conversation online. or a personal visit to the office.
